Long before they were conqueredif, indeed, they have beenthe White Mountains of New Hampshire imprinted themselves in the mind's eye of all who saw them. They held a sacred place in the spirituality of local tribes, who treated with particular respect that inhospitable peak we know as Mount Washington, with its fearsome winds and sudden storms. In early colonial times, only the adventurous would approach, but later, trailblazers and enterprising settlers opened the mountain region to travelers, whose numbers multiplied with the circulation of paintings and engravings capturing the pristine and rugged beauty of the area.
This second volume in the Visions in Granite series offers a glimpsethrough the immediacy of expertly rendered landscapesof the White Mountains and of the region's lakes, notches, and ledges as they were first encountered. And it shows us those same places through the eyes of contemporary painters, providing reassurance that some of the state's most notable features still possess the power to awe and inspire.
